Narrow gap welding (NGW) can be used to weld thick plates with I-type grooves for shipbuilding and pressure vessels etc manufacturing industries, and thus is a high efficient and low cost process. This study develops a new high-speed rotation arc system to weld narrow gap joints. In this new rotation system, an electrode wire passes through the hollow axis of motor and then stretches out from an eccentric nozzle. The hollow axis motor rotates the offset nozzle and drives the arc on the tip of wire to rotate with a diameter, so as to ensure enough penetration into the sidewalls in NGW. This arc rotation system has advantages of high moving precision, compact configuration, small volume, and low noise etc. Also, the system fabrication and practical narrow gap welding experiments are discussed. Experimental results show that the rotation arc system developed can stably and reliably operate at different rotation frequencies and diameters, and this process obviously improves the penetration into sidewalls in NGW and can find practical industrial applications.
