High cost of noise barrier construction is led by improper design parameters to a great extent. Based on the investigation of characteristics of current noise barrier design methods and the railway noise prediction model, an optimal design method is presented. Cost of noise barrier is chosen as objective function, noise reduction is acoustic constraints, and the length of noise barrier is considered in design variables. Insertion loss is calculated by each third-octave band of a representative spectrum and is corrected by the effects of reflection and angle of sight, hi the designs of railway noise barrier and light rail transit noise barrier, the availability of the optimal method in reducing the noise and improving the economic solution is proved through the comparison between the current methods and the optimal method, noise reduction characteristic and optimization design of trackside low barrier is analysed. In addition, the main reasons for the practical noise reduction less than theoretic value are illuminated, the effects of design parameters on cost of noise barrier and noise reduction characteristic are discussed, and its results are instructive to the selection of the design parameters and shape of barrier.
