IMPACT OF CHINA CANADA FEED INDUSTRY PROJECT ON FEED AND LIVESTOCK INDUSTRY IN CHINA

The China Canada Feed Industry Project (CCFIP) has been implemented since 1997 with the initial activities being primarily focused on the development of the Ministry of Agriculture Feed Industry Centre (MAFIC) at the China Agriculture University in Beijing. The MAFIC institution consists of a world class laboratory, teaching facilities and an adjacent pre-mix processing plant which has proven to be a valuable income generation opportunity to ensure sustainability of the MAFIC. MAFIC now provides well-recognized research, comprehensive feed analysis, training and technical services to the feed industry and has a functional cooperating network of over 100 feed mills throughout China. This network of feed mills is distributed throughout every province and autonomous region in China and represents the medium to large size feed mills which have made steady improvement in quality, sales volumes and profitability during the period of their close cooperation with the CCFIP. It has been estimated that these feed mills produce approximately 6 million tones of feed per year or 8% of the more than 75 million tones of animal feeds produced in China annually. Technical training programs have been delivered to many more participants form other feed mills as well. The MAFIC, through project support, has also developed an award winning internet technical service through its website that receives more than 8,000 hits per day and reaches well beyond the network of cooperating feed mills.
