In this paper a comprehensive model to analyze life-cycle cost for reinforced concrete subjected to chloride exposure is described in detail. The model uses diffusion equations with various boundary conditions to simulate different exposure conditions, and geometries. Also, the change in diffusion coefficients and surface concentrations of chloride over time are incorporated. In addition to mixture proportions, pozzolans, and slag, which affect the diffusion coefficient, techniques for handling membranes and sealers are discussed. The effects of corrosion inhibitors, bar coatings, and stainless steel can be incorporated. Experimental data supporting the model are presented. Finally, examples of cost analyses are given for bridge deck and marine pile applications.
