Unveiling Next-Generation Search Technologies: Answer Extraction on the Web

We explore the impact of the emerging domain of open-domain question answering on Web searching. Users submit natural language questions to find relevant information, and the system returns small strings extracted from Web pages, which directly answer the questions. Experimental results show important qualitative improvements with respect to output obtained from search engines, and unveil some of the desirable features of next-generation Web search technology.
