The advent of many new applications calls upon the Internet to support various Quality of Service (QoS) requirements. Up to now, the Internet has not provided a way to support QoS appropriately because most of the data of the Internet has been best-effort traffic. To deal with the QoS problems, the Internet routing protocols, such as Open Shortest Path First (OSPF) and Border Gateway Protocol (BGP), should be revised to inform routers of detail link state information. OSPF extensions for QoS routing have been proposed in some documents, but research into BGP extensions has not yet been processed. In this paper, we propose BGP extensions for QoS routing. While a current BGP system receives only the path information selected by other external BGP peers, a system of the BGP extensions in this paper receives simplified information of other autonomous systems (ASs), not only path information but also their entire structures. This information enables an application on a source node to select a route that can best support the specific QoS requirement. Considering the scalability, ATM link state aggregation schemes are applied to reduce the total amount of information of an entire AS.
