Communication Issues in Ubiquitous Computing

As more and more computers play a role in and around our everyday environment, Ubiquitous Computing (Ubicomp) environments are also increasingly present. Such environments have different requirements regarding computers and communication systems. Digital artefacts, small electronics embedded into everyday objects are of special interest in Ubicomp. These artefacts must only consume small amounts of energy and must be robust but still be able to compute data and communicate with other artefacts. We investigated such artefacts in seven projects. Experience from these projects are then integrated into the DiNet network presented here. DiNet is specially adapted to the needs of Ubicomp and allows to communicate devices via different media and types of networks.
