Web Services for portlet integration into corporate portals

Corporate decision makers expect adequate information independent of its physical storage or source. Therefore, integrated data structures and application architectures which are accessible through a personalized corporate portal are required. Nevertheless, today's integration standards for portal software usually allow little if any interoperability between software modules provided by different vendors. Solution initiatives for the specification of a uniform interface to access portal application functionalities seem to be little promising due to the lack of cooperation on the part of the portal software vendors. We present a concept for developing portal-specific software modules - so called "portlets" - that use Web Services encapsulating the underlying application functionalities as a uniform interaction layer between portals of different vendors.
