High speed drilling - new aspects for higher productivity

In production processes the need for a considerable reduction of machining times by means of higher cutting speeds and feed rates is conflicted by the demand for process safety. Reliable cutting parameters are often preferred instead of reduced machining times in order to avoid damages to cutting tools, machine tools and work pieces. Taking the drilling process as an example, a general increase of cutting parameters is not economic. In this paper the limiting and therefore critical factors for an optimized drilling process are identified and their influence on the process is described.
