The IEA Weyburn CO_2 Monitoring and Storage Project builds on EnCana's commercial enhanced oil recovery project located approximately 120km southeast of Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada, in the Western Canada Sedimentary Basin (WCSB) (Figure 1). The main objectives of this project are to assess the environmental, geological and economic feasibility of sequestering CO_2 in a Mississippian-age carbonate reservoir at a depth of approximately 1400m.rnAirphoto and satellite remote sensing over the past four decades have been directed to exploration and development of oil and gas, potash, and groundwater resources in the WCSB. Correlation of geological and geophysical maps and cross-sections with remotely sensed lineaments and lineament zones demonstrates the role and value of remote sensing in searching for joint zones (open-mode fractures), faults and related linear structural features. Based on these studies and developed knowledge, a project was designed to investigate the areal relationship of surface lineaments to inferred subsurface joint zones, faults and associated geological structures that may influence the long-term CO_2 storage performance at Weyburn (Figure 1).rnRemotely sensed lineaments were mapped from airphotos and satellite images in local, intermediate and regional study areas (Figure 2).rn1. Landsat 7 enhanced thematic mapper plus imagery was mapped in the 200km x 200km regional study area. Linear hydrographic and topographic features were also mapped at the regional scale.rn2. 1:60,000 panchromatic airphotos were mapped in an intermediate 48km x 58km study area that covers the risk assessment area.rn3. 1:15,840 panchromatic airphotos were mapped in the local Phase 1A EOR area.
