Block-based motion compensated prediction is the core of many popular visual coding standards such as MPEG-1/2/ 4, H.261/263/264, and has a significant effect on CODEC performance. Motion estimation can be very computationally intensive and so this compression performance may be at the expense of high computational complexity, which is often a bottle-neck for real-time conversational applications. In order to reduce the computational complexity while maintaining the video quality at the same time, many fast block-matching algorithms have been recently proposed. In this paper, we introduce a highly efficient predictive fast integer motion estimation algorithm called UMHexagonS, and propose a few enhancements on the original algorithm which can considerably further reduce the complexity of the JVT encoder with minimal loss in video quality. Simulation results show that, compared with full search (FS) , our enhanced algorithm can speed up a factor of 14 with bit rate increases within two percent.
