Application research of nanocomposite ceramics and its work dies is one of the hot topics in the interdisciplinary research fields of advanced manufacturing technology and new materials. The main progresses of research on the composition, microstructure and mechanical property of nanocomposite ceramic materials have been predominantly summarized. Application research of namocomposite ceramic materials in tools and dies and problems existed are further discussed. It's found that in recent tens of years various of nanocomposite ceramic materials such as Al_2O_3/SiCn, Al_2O_3/SiC/SiCn, Al_2O_3/ZrO_2n, Si_3N_4/TiNn, Si_3N_4/TiCn, Si_3N_4/SiCn, Si_3N_4/SiCn/SiCw, Al_2O_3/(SiC+ZrO_2)n, ZrO_2n/TiC/Al_2O_3, SiCn/TiC/Al_2O_3, SiCn/Sialon, Al_2O_3/Ti(C,N)n, Al_2O_3/Ti(C,N)n/SiCn, Al_2O_3/TiCn, Al_2O_3/TiC/TiNn, Al_2O_3/ Al_2O_3n/SiCn, Al_2O_3/TiC/Cr_3O_2 and TiC or Ti(C,N) based cermets reinforced by adding nano Al_2O_3, TiN or Ti(C,N) powders etc. all have obviously higher mechanical properties and engineering performances that micro composite ceramic materials can't compared with. Some of them have been used primarily in cutting tool materials. At present, researches on micro ceramic die materials mainly include to 3Y-TZP/Al_2O_3, Al_2O_3/Ni, Si_3N_4 ceramics and cermets used as drawing dies, (Ce-TZP)-Al_2O_3, PSZ, Sialon, Si_3N_4 ceramics used as hot extrusion dies and TZP-TiC-Al_2O_3, TZP, ZTA ceramics used as wiredrawing dies. While it's just at the beginning period to use nanocomposite ceramics to manufacture dies. Future research fields and development trends of nanocomposite ceramics which are used as cutting tool and die materials are proposed. It suggests that nano composite, nano/micro composite, functionally gradient composite, multi-phase and multi-scale composite, surface treatment techniques with ceramic powders and intelligent design of materials etc. are the potential and effective methods in the improvement of ceramic nanocomposite with application in tools and dies.
