Rapid formation of colored organ models is very meaningful to medical education and medical treatments. A process for generating coloring data for the rapid formation of surface colored organ models, based on CT volume datasets, was proposed. Processing a CT volume dataset includes the following procedures: filtering the volume dataset, interpolation between layers, searching for background voxels, cutting the volume dataset to expose its interior, searching for BVs, mapping gray scale to color space, thickening colored regions, and 3D digital halftoning. Implementations have demonstrated the feasibility of the proposed process. The process is also applicable to the processing of other 3D medical volume datasets, such as MRI and ultrasonic volume datasets.
