Experimental results were obtained for steady state single jets, interacting pairs of jets, and five jets entering together into fluidized beds of FCC particles covering a range of orifice sizes, orifice velocities and background superficial gas velocities. When jets from nozzles at the same horizontal level interacted, there was limited influence of each jet on the others until the jets actually overlapped. Hence results from single jet studies can be applied to the behaviour of interacting jets over most conditions of interest. Among the available literature correlations tested, the equation of Merry (1) was best able to predict the jet penetration for the range of conditions (orifice diameter 4.4 to 9.2 mm, jet velocity 50 to 170 m/s) investigated in this work. A jet is affected more by another jet below it than by a neighbouring jet at the same horizontal level or by one above it.
