This study compares the effect of mineral oils and poly-alpha-olefine (PAO) on the coefficient of friction of nanostructured hard thin Cr-N films having smooth surfaces or ones with pyramidal, conical or crater-like structures generated by varying the conditions in the deposition process. For the micro-contact conditions being studied, smooth surfaces showed higher friction than most nano-textured ones, while the crater structures showed the lowest. PAO was less effective than mineral oils, but their viscosity had only a small, probably insignificant, effect on friction. Increasing the sliding speed decreased friction, but with no clear correlation to viscosity.
