An experimental investigation has been undertaken for the treatment of sugar industry effluents using aerobic reactor in laboratory scale. Sludge sewage is used as a seed culture to treat these effluents. The sewage sludge is isolated and the populations of Bacteria, Fungi, and Actinomycetes are reported. The reactor performance characteristics i.e., Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) removal, Total Suspended Solids (TSS) and Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) reduction, pH were analysed. Results show that during the operating period of 24 h, the COD removal of 88.38% is reached for the initial concentrations of 6996 mgCOD/1. The results on the effect of initial substrate concentration on % COD removal in an Aerobic Reactor show that as time increases the % COD removal increases. The capability of the three models namely, the First Order, Diffusional and Singh models in representing the kinetic data of the present work are reported. The results indicate that the First Order and Diffusional models are best suited for an aerobic digestion, while the Singh model is inadequate.
