SLOW RELEASING WOODCHIP FERTILIZER EFFECT ON RICE FIELD

Three different species of wood were used for making woodchip fertilizer. Woodchip fertilizer made from P. tomentiglandulosa retained the highest amount of N (23.61%), K_2O (20.60%) and Quercus P_2O_5 (19.76%). Field experiment was conducted in Experimental field of Kangwon Agricultural Research and Extension Services, Chunchon from May 2004 to September 2004 to investigate 15% and 30% reduced application of woodchip fertilizers on rice production. Experimental field size was 50m~2. Full application of woodchip fertilizer was applied in rice field at recommended dose of N-P_2O_5-K_2O: 11-4.5-5.7kg/l,000m~2. It was found that 15% and 30% reduced application of woodchip fertilizer can improve the chemical properties of soil. Also it reduced the insect and disease infestation. But full application of woodchip fertilizer at recommended dose (N-P_2O_5-K_2O: 11-4.5-5.7kg/l,000 m~2) increased the rice production. Woodchip fertilizer made from Pinus tomentiglandulosa increased the organic matter content in soil compared with woodchip fertilizer made from Quercus or Pinus densiflora. Woodchip fertilizer showed an excellent result in sandy soil for it's slow releasing properties compared with commercial chemical fertilizers.
