INTEGRATED ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT OF HYDROPOWER PROJECTS

At the onset of various activities related to pre-construction and construction of any hydroppwer project, the ecological equilibrium existing in its pristine form, may get affected if the activities are not carried out in conformity to the ecosystem. Environmental Impacts of the hydropower projects viz. Land submergence, Deforestation, Landslides, Socio-economic impacts, impact on terrestrial and aquatic fauna/flora, Muck generation, Quarrying, Water Quality, Archaeological heritage etc. needs to be analyzed and addressed so that the impacts could be minimized. Though Hydropower projects are known to be non-polluting and environmentally benign, Environmental Impact Assessment is an integral part of planning of the projects. The important issues involved and probable impacts on environment including the preventive measures/ remedial interventions like Catchment Area Treatment, Compensatory Afforestation, Resettlement and Rehabilitation of Project Affected People, Restoration of Quarry areas/Muck disposal sites, Landscaping, Conservation of Aquatic Fauna, Sustenance of Water Quality etc have been highlighted in the paper especially with reference to management plans adapted and implemented by National Hydroelectric Power Corporation Ltd. at its various projects. The authors have tried to bring out in detail how impacts on environment can be managed and integrated with project planning to ensure sustainable development of hydropower projects as well as the area.
