The geothermal energy is a lesser-known source of energy in India, though in countries like Italy, New Zealand, USA etc, this natural source is being utilized for electric power generation since 1904. In India geothermal springs occur in association with weak tectonic features and graben structures all over the country. The temperature of these springs ranges from 30°-100 ℃. Puga-Chummathang in Ladakh, Tattapani in Chattisgarh' and Manikaran in Himachal Pradesh are some of the major geothermal field. These fields are considered prospective sites for utilizing this resource for power generation. With this in view, NHPC, an organization basically involved in setting up hydro power projects in the country, has been chosen as a nodal agency by MNES for exploitation of Tattapani geothermal field in Chattisgarh state. NHPC has taken up extensive studies for setting up a pilot plant for generating electric power from geothermal fluid. The present paper deals with the NHPC approach for evaluation and utilization of this untapped source of energy.
