From structure and application points of view the analysis has been made for eco-toxicological properties of reactive and direct dye, which are two major types of dyes used for cellulose dyeing. It can understand that there are quite a few eco-toxicological problems in reactive dyes, through, the measures can be taken to resolve them. For instance, the allergic problem of reactive dye can be mitigated by developing the dyes with fewer or without dust in granule or liquid form. AOX problem can be resolved by developing the dyes of new structure containing no heavy metal. The extractable heavy metal problem can be improved by developing the dyes of new structure containing no heavy metal. In order to improve the ecological characteristic of reactive dye and to reduce CSB value in effluent it shall develop new type of reactive dye of high fixation degree and low salt dyeing. At the same time the consumption of water and energy of reactive dyeing may further cut back along with the development of new applying technique. Comparing with reactive dye the fatal problem of direct dye is the carcin-aromatic amine in its structure. It is costly to develop new type of aromatic amine or direct dye of new structure for superseding these carcin-aromatic amine, that results in high price of direct dye, plus the weakness of direct dye in respect of eco-toxicity and performance, the further development of direct dye is hindered. Therefore it is clear that the reactive dye is a type of dye for cellulose fiber with bight future.
