摘要

Connecting to the Internet through a dial-up ISP has long been an indispensable solution for Internet users. In this paper, we present a technique to study packet routing from geographically dispersed dial-up POPs to various Internet destinations. We made long distance telephone calls to a remote ISP POP to simulate local user requests in that POP area. We chose the top 30 population centers in the US as areas from which to initiate the routing. By visualizing the routing traces from all different areas simultaneously, we noticed that the graphs change from day to day, reflecting the dynamics of packet routing. Fewer ASes and hops were involved if the dial-up ISP and the web server ISP were the same. Multiple websites supporting the same URL might end up being used for serving remote requests instead of local ones. We also captured service abnormalities.
