Using Server to Maintain Workstations Software for Improving Computer Classroom Teaching

For providing a well computer classroom teaching, it requires strong management, including to keep all workstations normally work and easily to add/remove software systems to/from all workstations for teachers conducting new courses. This paper presents an efficient, fast, and cheap approach by using server to maintain the software integrity for managing computer classroom workstations. The basic concept of the proposed approach is to (1) install normal software systems on a workstation, including operating system and applications, (2) make one image copy of the workstation's hard disk and store it onto network server, and (3) copy the image file from the server to the remaining workstations. Soon after, when a workstation's is unable to boot or runs into some hitches, we may only perform a server-based recovery copy for restoring to its normal status. Moreover, the approach can automatically change computer name and internet protocol (IP) address for each workstation.
