Since the capillary diffusion of powerful computing systems Medical Imaging has undergone a profound transformation providing new ways to physicians to conduct research and perform diagnosis and prevention. In this work a computational environment for medical imaging purposes based on a grid architecture is used to build a medical imaging application. It results from the interaction of scientists devoted to the design and deployment of new tomo-graphic reconstruction techniques, researchers in the field of distributed and parallel architectures and physicians involved with tomographic imaging. The single software, hardware and medical components are described. Their integration into a distributed framework provides mutual benefits to both the scientific and the medical community, and represents the basis for the creation of a global, scientific, virtual community that reaches beyond the limits of space, remotely sharing not only physical resources but also experience and knowledge.
