Implementation Issues for Supporting Multicast and QoS over IEEE1394 Home Networks

As most computers have been connected to the Internet, much research has started to integrate several kinds of devices such as computer peripherals and electronic home devices in a network. Networking devices less intelligent than computers becomes necessary due to the poor scalability of interfacing various peripheral devices to computers and the demand of easy remote access to several home devices. IEEE1394 is considered to be one of the most promising home network standards to incorporate devices into a network. Note that IEEE1394 is a high-speed broadcasting network running over two twisted pairs of serial lines as a transmission medium. This paper describes design issues and implementation problems learned during building a LINUX gateway between an IEEE 1394 home network and Ethernet. Especially it introduces problems experienced from implementing uni-cast and multicast mechanisms guaranteeing QoS.
