In this distributed television production the camera crew and their equipment depend on a high-capacity ATM network to connect them to the studio for an online production. 1.2 Gbps of bandwidth are used to carry audio, video and monitoring signals between the two locations. The network's capacity allows for the uncompressed transmission of the audio and video signals to meet the high-quality demands of broadcasting. At the same time the avoidance of complex compression algorithms minimizes delays and ensures a spontaneous interaction between camera crew and director during the online editing process. The study focuses on the network infrastructure and describes the latency involved in the adaptation of SDI to ATM. The results are compared to conventional MPEG-2 compression and transmission over ATM.
