The work presents a numerical simulation of 8 t/d field-scale rotary kiln waste incinerator. In this part, a computational modeling study of the gaseous phenomena occurring within the rotary kiln is specially performed, using the commercial CFD-code FLUENT. The three-dimensional (3D) steady governing equations for mass, momentum, energy and species, together with the k-ε turbulence model, are formulated and solved using a finite volume method. The combustion reaction is modeled using the eddy-dissipation model to predict the conversion of CH_4, CO_2, O_2, etc. Especially, the 3D simulation results can be further used to optimize the air flow design of rotary kiln incinerator. The optimum mixing characteristics can be obtained by changing the angle of centerline of either air inlet or that of the burner.
