EUROSION: Primary results of the review of experience in erosion management across European coasts

One quarter of the European Union's coast - 16,000 km - is currently eroding despite the development of a wide range of measures to protect shorelines from eroding and flooding. The prospect of further sea level rise due to climate change and the heritage of mismanagement in the past imply that coastal erosion will be a growing concern in the future. Recently the European Council of ministers has adopted a recommendation for the implementation of integrated coastal zone management (ICZM), where sustainable coastal defence and transparent information management are key issues. In this way the DG Environment has commissioned a service contract called EUROSION, regarding policy advice on coastal erosion to a consortium lead by the Dutch Institute for Coastal and Marine Management (RIKZ), and includes the largest European network of coastal practitioners "EUCC-The Coastal Union", the international branch of the French Geographic Institute (IGN France International) specializing in GIS and mapping engineering, the French Environment Institute (IFEN), the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB), the European Information Technology EADS SD&E (ex-MATRA S&I), and the French Institute for Geological and Mining Research (BRGM), (EUROSION WP 5 Trend Analysis, 2002).
