A comprehensive series of laboratory tests was conducted on dredged sediments from the Hudson River in order to investigate the potential use of cement-treated dredged sediments as fill in transportation-related projects. At three water contents: 90, 130, and 170%, the dredged sediments were mixed with Type Ⅰ portland cement at three levels (9, 11, and 13 by wet weight), so that the effects of various levels of added cement and water content could be studied. For the purposes of this paper, only the results of index property tests, compaction tests, and unconfined compressive strength (UCS) tests are discussed. The untreated sediment can be typically classified as organic clay/silt of medium to high plasticity (OH), according to the Unified Soil Classification System (USCS). Index tests results indicate that upon cement treatment, the treated dredged sediments become inorganic silt of low plasticity (MH). The UCS tests show that the dredged sediments, when treated with cement, exhibit reasonably high undrained shear strength. Overall, the conclusion of this study is that these cement-treated dredged sediments can be used as fill material in transportation-related construction.
