Part Ⅰ Invited speakers' paper : Kidney Damage in Laying Hens (Urolithiasis)

The kidneys are involved in a wide range of essential functions therefore it is not surprising that kidney dysfunction can cause profound problems for the poultry industry. These problems range in severity from increased manure moisture to catastrophic flock mortality. This presentation will focus on a specific kidney damage syndrome called "urolithiasis" because kidney stones (uroliths) frequently are found in the ureters of affected bkds. Urolithiasis is defined as an acquired degenerative kidney disease of pullets and laying hens involving focal mineralization of the kidneys, progressive obstruction of the ureters by uroliths (kidney stones), and kidney atrophy "upstream" of the site of ureteral obstruction combined with compensatory hypertrophy by the undamaged portions of the kidneys.
