Reinforced concrete (RC) beam embedded with steel reinforcement usually gives a ductile behaviour but low strength whereas use of fibre-reinforced-plastic (FRP) rods provides a higher ultimate strength but limited ductility. It is thus thought that a combined use of steel rebars and FRP rods in concrete beam can offer a ductile and strong performance. To verify this, an analytical model is generated. The model computes the flexural behaviour of concrete members reinforced with conventional steel reinforcing bars and novel FRP rods. The model implementation is based on the use of the true stress-strain relationships for plain concrete, steel rebar and FRP rod. The main variable considered in this study is arrangement/depth of steel rebars and FRP rods. This paper presents some particular findings from the model. Most results are also compared with that of concrete beam reinforced only with steel rebars.
