Drug Loaded Ultrafine PVA Fiber Mats Prepared by Electrospinning

Submicron poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) fiber mats embedded with Aspirin, a model of small molecular weight drugs, and bovine serum albumin (BSA), a model of protein drugs, were prepared by electrospinning of their aqueous solutions with PVA, respectively. Fiber morphology was observed under a scanning electron microscope. The composition of the fiber mats was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The in vitro release properties were studied. Results indicated that both Aspirin and BSA could be incorporated into PVA ultrafine fiber mats by electrospinning. There were some molecules of the drug distributed on the surface of the PVA fiber mats. The morphology of the fiber mats was influenced by the drug amount. More beaded and irregular shaped fibers were found with the increase of the drug amount in the fiber mats. Results of in vitro drug release showed that both Aspirin and BSA released more quickly from PVA fiber mats than those released from PVA casting films because of the large surface areas and high porosity of the fiber mats.
