Multi-Location manufacturing enterprises are being forced into greater collaboration with customers, suppliers and inner sub-plants in order to produce quality products in smaller batches, shorter lead times and with greater variety. Accordingly, the tasks of design and implementation for the multi-location enterprises-oriented manufacturing execution system must be conducted in these distributed sub-plants across traditional organizational boundaries. Hybrid distributed manufacturing execution system (HDMES) can be widely considered as the typical case of hybrid application system. In this paper, the management characteristics of a multi-location special steel enterprises are analyzed; the flat-style management pattern system architecture of Enterprise Information System (EIS) for special steel enterprises is constructed and the kernel functional structures of HDMES-planning and scheduling system and material flow tracking system are brought about. This paper proposes the use of applied information models to support the distributed product manufacturing process. While extensive work has been fulfilled in developing effective data models, more effort has been performed in perfecting the manufacturing model of multi-location special steel enterprises. Different approaches used to model various aspects of manufacturing processes are reviewed and found, and an approach based on scheduling rules, multi-agent technique, distributed control, multi-closed loop control and user cooperation is presented to solve the distributed planning and scheduling problem. It hierarchically decomposes the large-scale planning and scheduling problem into the planning level problems, the scheduling level problems and material tracking feedback level problems. Relatively, material flow tracking model based on furnace number and production batch is also given, which can distinguish the identical batch material with the same attribute. On the basis of the corresponding relation between production number and contract number, the contract tracking model is proposed. Based on the grouping of products with similar attributes, the material balance model is put forward. This system is developed based on J2EE and its interrelated modules work dynamically and systematically in Web environment. The implementation results for Dongbei special steel group show the system is feasible and valid.
