Economic Survey 2005 of SME in the field of microsystems - turnover, employment, markets and export countries

IVAM conducted its first comprehensive data survey among its members, which are small and medium-sized enterprises and research institutes in the field of Microsystems technology. As an important result, all the companies are internationally competitive, since most of the annual turnover of the companies is generated through export. The US are by far the biggest market. Most of the small and medium-sized companies are rather small than medium. More than half of the companies have only 20 or less employees. Most of the companies plan to create new jobs. Two thirds of the German companies want to extend their personnel remarkably (more than 6 % compared to the current number). The increase of turnover is planned to a major extend. One third of the German companies want to increase their turnover more than 11% in the next 3 to 5 years. Though the starting point for employees and turnover of the SME is low, we expect major challenges regarding qualified personnel and funding for further growth. Microsystems engineering, medical technology, automation, sensing, measurement and control and automotive are the most important fields of activity for the German companies.
