Binder-Pigment Aspects of Coatings for Low VOC Coatings and Ink Formulations

Paint/printing ink is a multi-component system. Amongst others, binders and pigments constitute two important elements of these systems. The metallic pigments i.e., aluminum and bronze though comprising a very small part of the entire pigment spectrum, impart unique effects and properties to the resulting ink and paint. The binders viz., vinyl, epoxy, polyurethane and acrylics are notable in anchoring the pigments to the substrate surface. Recent developments in binders and their relationship to the metallic pigments, particularly aluminum, in effecting the observed properties of the resultant system are discussed in this article. Results on aluminum pigments studied in this article showed good compatibility with the water borne binder systems in the presence of a newly developed aromatic phosphoester type surfactant, MAAS-Ⅱ. Coatings produced with aluminum pigments of the present study in conjunction with acrylic-epoxy binders yield superior properties relative to solvent borne epoxy systems.
