Exterior elastomeric coatings are highly formulated materials containing pigments, extenders, and polymeric binders. The recommended application of these finishes are very thick films which act as functional weather barriers for large monolithic surfaces such as masonry and concrete walls. The key to these formulations is the binder, which provides the properties that enable the coating to survive the deleterious effects of sunlight, moisture, and climate and temperature changes with minimal changes in dirt resistance. The route for sustainable dirt pick-up resistance requires a thick film application. A thinner film application of these traditional coatings would not only affect mechanical performance but also result in very poor dirt resistance. We now have the technology that offers applicators the ability to apply a thinner-film elastomeric wall coating with improved dirt resistance while offering some crackbridging capabilities. This technology can also function as a traditional, thick film elastomeric coating, offering customers the ability to formulate to desired application and performance requirements.
