Collector (isomeric alkenes) and modifier (water-soluble co-polymers) selection for the flotation of different coal grades are demonstrated by studying the energy states and by analyzing the molecular structures of the reagents. 2-vinylhexadiene–1.5 reagent and its working mechanism is substantiated and proposed for the flotation of different coal mixtures. An effective collector (polymeric distillate), which includes isobutylene trimers and tetramers, was proposed for the flotation of “K” grade coals. The reagent conditions are developed using small amounts of water-soluble modifiers. Co-polymer methyl metacrylates with metacrylamide and ammonium salt of metacrylate acid (deman) and with methyl metacrylate ethanolamide and co-polymer nonylphenol with ethylene oxide are proposed to be used as those modifiers. The reason for their high flotation activity due to first feeding them to pulp for conditioning before the collector addition are determined.
