Conventionally-derived partition curves provide only an approximation of dense medium cyclone (DMC) partitioning performance. Density tracers, introduced around 1980, provide precise partition curves more quickly and at lower cost. Tracer retrieval can be problematic if heavily-loaded multi-slope "banana" screens are employed. South Africa's CSIR and Virginia Tech were pioneers in the development of disposable, radio-detectable density tracers. Complete systems are now available, allowing a plant engineer or operator to alone conduct monthly audits of all DMC or bath circuits. Coal losses are immediately identified and, in most cases, they can be quickly corrected.
