After discussing the historical events leading to arrival of emulsion explosives in the forefront of commercial explosives, the paper describes briefly different types of emulsion explosives, their method of manufacture and current trend in usage. Attention is drawn to the fact that contrary to expectations even in the relatively short period of ten years since its introduction in large scale, emulsion explosives have suffered from an unusually high number of hazardous situations leading many times to accidents during manufacture, storage, transportation and usage. The various hazard situations likely to arise during manufacture are described with suggestions to lower the risk. Factors influencing hazard levels in emulsion explosives are also discussed.
