A series of experiments was performed to differentiate the parameters of suspended-sediment particles relative to water in a turbulent, free-surface flow carrying only suspended sediment (no sediment deposition on the bed). Instantaneous and mean distributions of the velocity-lag between water and sediment were obtained using Particle Tracking Velocimetry (PTV) and Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV). In average, the velocities of sediment particles were found to be lower than for water tracers in the streamwise direction. Important differences can be noted in the distributions of the upward and downward moving particles. Based on these observations, the paper proposes an analysis procedure that can provide a useful description of water-particle interaction using a two-phase flow investigative approach.
