The measurement of the peak insertion loss of hearing protection systems when exposed toimpulsive acoustic events is of interest to manufacturers and users of hearing protectionsystems used in industrial applications, while using firearms or when exposed to explosions.The recently adopted standard, ANSI S12.42-2010, defines a test method and analysisprocedure for evaluating the impulsive peak insertion loss of a hearing protection systemusing an impulsive stimulus, a test fixture and a series of recorded time waveforms. Theauthors have developed a system for acquiring the required time waveforms andconducting the peak insertion loss analysis. This paper will provide an overview of theANSI S12.42 test method, the system that has been developed to implement it and presentsome examples hearing protection systems that have been evaluated using the system.
