摘要

The design of digital instrumentation and control (I&C) systems involves considerable effort to minimize the risk of error propagation and common cause failures (CCFs), which may interfere with the safety functions of the systems. There is therefore a need to assess the design to determine whether possible errors could jeopardize system safety by causing concurrent failures in structures, systems or components intended to be independent. The hypothesis behind the reported work is that this assessment can be improved by using a suitable set of analysis techniques combined with formal or semi-formal description techniques. In this paper, the focus is to identify a set of description techniques applicable to capture error propagation and CCFs in the design.
