Multiple working instructions based arrangement of displays and controls on back up panel in nuclear power, the following arrangement principles should be considered: the importance, using frequency, using sequence of displays or controls, and the relativity between displays or controls. The traditional method arranges the displays or controls in designer's mind by means of their experience, it can hardly think about all the factors listed above synthetically. The traditional arrangement scheme varies from person to person, because of human's judgment is easily be influenced by cognitively and affectivity predilection. By using the novel ant colony algorithm, it can take the arrangement principles listed above into account. So we developed the ant colony algorithm optimization objective function with regarding the above arrangement principles and used to calculate the optimal arrangement sequence. As an application case, the novel method is used to arrangement the controls on a back up panel of a nuclear power plant. In this application, the importance weights, operating frequency weights, operating sequence weights and relativity weights of controls are used as the variables of the optimization objective function. The process of solving the arrangement sequence with ant colony algorithm was introduced, and the feasibility of the method was validated through the case.
