The traditional approach of ocean data acquisition, based on thedeployment of battery operated stations with sensors for data recordingduring some programmed time for later recovery, has severaldrawbacks that may be overcome with the use of Underwater SensorNetworks (UWSN). In this work we investigate the feasibility ofUWSN for deep-ocean data acquisition. The limitations of acousticchannel are discussed and taken into account to analyze the feasibilityof this class of network for one important application, deep-oceancurrent monitoring. Also, we propose a method for UWSNsynchronization based on the tide variations.
