Finite element method is a powerful tool to predict the welding residualstresses and distortions. However, the phenomena in welding are threedimensionalin their nature and the three-dimensional thermal-elasticplasticFE analysis requires very long computational. In this paper, theapplicability of the two-dimensional approximation is examined usingthe multi-pass welding on a flat plate as an example. Based on thecomputed welding residual stresses and distortions, the limitation of thetwo-dimensional approximation is discussed. Further, an iterativesubstructure method is proposed as a method to reduce thecomputational time in three-dimensional analysis and its effectivenessis demonstrated.
