JOIA (Jalpan Ocean Industries Association) conducted a field indentationtest lin the winter season from 1996 to 2000 at Notoro Lagoon(44” OS’N., 144” lO’E), Hokkaido to acquire basic data for evaluatingi,ce load acting on an offshore structure in the sea covered with floes. Inparallel with it, the fundamental mechanical and physical properties ofthe sea ice (first- year ice) at Notoro Lagoon were examined and thedata of five years were accumulated and summarized. In addition,consokidated sea ice was artificially prepared on the Lagoon undernatural wealther conditions and its compressive and shear strength weremeasured to get basic information for understanding the mechanicalstrength of ridge ice.The paper reports the summary of mechanical and physical propertiesof first-year sea ice at Notoro Lagoon and the elemental data onmechanical strength of the sea ice when it was transformed intoconsolidated structure.
