Calculation of design wave height corresponding to a return periodplays an important role in coastal and ocean engineering for planningand designing of marine structures. This paper proposes a NonlinearLeast Square Method (NLSM), which estimates three unknownparameters of Weibull distribution simultaneously by an iterationmethod. Statistical test shows that NLSM fits each data sample verywell. The effect of different parameter-fitting methods, distributionmodels, and threshold was also discussed in the selection of designwave heights. Best-fitting probability distribution was given andcorresponding return wave heights were estimated for engineeringdesign. Study shows that both goodness test and visual examination areprerequisite to selecting a theoretical distribution.
