Composite Wrapping as a Means of Corrosion Mitigation

Corrosion-damaged reinforced concrete structures are being wrappedwith composite materials in an attempt to starve them of oxygen,moisture, and chlorides. Theoretically, this could arrest the corrosionprocess if the necessary ingredients for corrosion are eliminated. It maybe difficult to stop the process if efforts are not taken to address thecorrosion activity directly. Therefore, the procedure may be moreeffective if corrosion inhibitors are applied before wrapping. Somemanufacturers are even suggesting that wrapping should be used in newconstruction, particularly where the exposure conditions are expected tobe severe, as in offshore environments. Laboratory and fieldinvestigations have been carried out on columns and beams that havesuffered corrosion damage due to chloride penetration. The process ofcomposite wrapping and its potential to provide protection to offshorestructures will be discussed based on the findings from theseinvestigations and an actual field installation.
