Novel syndiotactic poly(vinyl alcohol) (s-PVA)/iodine polarizing films with high molecular weight and high syndiotacticity were prepared. Especially, to precisely identify the effect of molecular weight of s-PVA on the water stability and degree of polarization of s-PVA/iodine complex film, we prepared four (s-PVA)s with similar syndiotactic diad contents of ca. 63% and with different number-average degrees of polymerization of 900, 6000, 10000, and 17000, respectively. Degree of polarization of film was 99.9%. Also, degree of solubility of film in hot water (80 ℃) was almost zero.
