SOLVING CORROSION PROBLEMS IN THE CHEMICALPROCESSING INDUSTRY BY COMBINING LABORATORYCORROSION TESTS AND ONLINE CORROSION MONITORINGTECHNOLOGIES

Laboratory corrosion tests and online corrosion monitoring are two essential tools for solvingvarious corrosion problems in the chemical processing industry. They have been widely used for selectingmaterials of construction for new processes, optimizing equipment integrity in operating processes,defining process conditions that are compatible with materials of construction, and mitigating corrosion-relatedfailures. With a wider range of techniques available in both areas, and even though some of themhave been successfully used in the academic areas, the challenge has always been in applying themeffectively to solve practical problems in the chemical processing industry. Background on how theadvanced laboratory testing and field monitoring techniques are currently used to control corrosion in thechemical processing industry (principally in DuPont) will be provided, along with some discussions onthe pros and cons of each technique.
