This paper presents a PC based mathematicaland rapid prototyping technique foranthropometric accommodation in the design ofcrew station cockpits using the principle ofsimulation based design. The developedtechnique, called 'Expanded AccommodationAnalysis Technique' (EAAT), is capable ofanalyzing anthropometric data using multivariatePrincipal Component Analysis (PCA) approachto describe the body size variability existing in agiven flying population. A number of body sizerepresentative cases are established which, whenused properly in specifying and designing anycockpit, will ensure the accommodation of adesired level of the population.The technique evaluates the percentageaccommodation of a given population in acockpit that is to be designed using specificmanikin cases as boundary conditions. The dataon the manikins is used to design the cockpit inorder to ensure the accommodation of theestablished percentage. In the case where any ofthe manikins cannot be accommodated, thetechnique has the capability of informing thedesigner why the manikin(s) is notaccommodated. The technique is interactive anduser friendly, requiring little or no training from anew user.
